Reversed Cards

What upside-down cards mean

Reversed Cards

When a card appears upside-down (reversed), its meaning shifts. A reversal rarely means the plain opposite of the upright card, and it doesn't automatically make the card bad. It adds nuance.

Common Meanings of Reversals

Blocked: The card's quality is present but stuck

Turned inward: The card plays out inside you more than in the world around you

Delayed: The outcome is coming, but not yet

Excess or deficiency: Too much or too little of the card's quality

Shadow side: The unhealthy expression of the archetype

Examples

The Sun reversed: Still positive, but the joy may be muted, a setback temporary, or you may need to find your own light

Ten of Swords reversed: The worst is over and recovery is starting

The Emperor reversed: Rigidity, control issues, or a lack of structure

Should You Read Reversals?

It's a personal choice. Many readers use them for added depth. This site includes reversals by default because they give every card a second set of meanings. You can turn them off in Settings.
