The Devil
The chains were loose the whole time.
Yes or no?
Something here is a trap or an attachment. Walk away from it.
The card
Two figures stand chained to a horned devil's block — but look closely and the chains are loose enough to lift off over their heads. That's the entire teaching of the card: the trap is real and the exit is right there. It's the Lovers gone shadow, desire curdled into a thing that owns you.
If this card were a person
This is the person who names the thing you're chained to and points out the chains were never locked. Blunt about appetite and self-deception, they can be uncomfortable company precisely because they see the trap you've been pretending is a choice.
Hebrew letter & Qabalah
ע Ayin means eye — what you see, and what watching does to you. It walks Path 26: Tiphareth to Hod, the mind caught in its own hunger.
Upright meaning
An unhealthy attachment, addiction, or self-imposed chain. The lock is open — you can leave.
An unhealthy attachment, a self-imposed chain, a habit that has its hooks in you. The lock is open — you can leave. But you have to want the leaving more than you want the comfort of the familiar cage.
A bond that has become compulsive or controlling. Chemistry isn't the same as compatibility. You know the difference between being drawn to someone and being trapped by them.
Work that's become an addiction — to money, status, or just the structure of having somewhere to be. Worth asking: if the paycheck disappeared, would you still do this?
Name the thing you're attached to that you know isn't serving you. Not to quit it today — just name it with precision. 'I spend X hours on Y because it makes me feel Z.' That's your data.
Reversed meaning
Breaking free, releasing what was binding you, reclaiming your power.
Breaking free from what was binding you. Reclaiming what you gave over to a habit, relationship, or system that cost too much. The chain is off — now actually walk away from it.
Leaving a dynamic that had become unhealthy, or finally seeing a pattern for what it is. The clarity feels good. Don't let nostalgia walk you back in.
Releasing an obligation, a bad contract, a role that had you in a headlock. The exit is real. Use the freed capacity for something you'd actually choose.
Do one concrete thing this week that the 'bound' version of you wouldn't have done — make the call, spend the money, take the afternoon off. Act like you're already free.
